Even Though we don’t provide a mulching service, we have noticed how
many homeowners and landscapers have caused more damage than good to
trees that they have mulched. Volcano mulching is a common thing that
a lot of people practice. Correctly spreading out the mulch and making
sure it is not piled on the tree will make a huge difference in the
amount of nutrition and health of the tree.
Why Volcano mulching is BAD
When wet, the mulch holds too much moisture against the bark, which
can cause the bark to gain holes. Moisture against the tree and
moisture inside causes the bark to fail. This creates stress, avenues
for bugs, and other spores to enter the tree. This also causes the
roots to live closer to the mulch level seeking moisture and other
nutrients.
Tips about proper mulching
- Ensure proper spreading out the mulch and that it is not piled up
on the tree 3-5” of depth. Evenly spread out the dripline of your
tree. ( almost the tips of the branches ) - Mulching is basically a time-release fertilizer that replenishes
naturally decomposed organic nutrients.
